the morning after

This was my view out of my bedroom this morning. Although it was hell driving home yesterday, it all looked so pretty in the morning light. As the day wore on, clouds rolled in and thrummed down more snow, sleet and rain. This pretty view is now gone and mired by dirty sand.

Sigh. I cannot wait for this winter weather to be over. Not that I welcome humid 90 degree days either, but this darkness and drudgery wears on a person.

Oh, hello

It's been awhile. I discovered this past week that my lens no longer works on my camera and apparently this has jammed my creative ability to write posts. My new lens is on its way and should be here next week. In the meantime, you will have to enjoy a few cell phone Instagram posts in the meantime.

I can't wait to do a full post on this gem! The top is covered in chalkboard paint and I spray painted the bottoms of the legs in Looking Glass by Krylon. Just a few more things left to do and the. I will do the full review.

Is anyone else excited that daffodils are in the stores? They're just so cheery in my opinion...I just had to show off my newest embroidery hoop with them. The fabric is a remnant from Maramiki's shop on Etsy and then I embroidered the word love on it. I love the texture of the piece.

Speaking of love, Happy Valentine's Day to those who celebrate it. To those who don't, bah humbug. I encourage everyone to show each other love every day of the year, not just on this random day that was picked.

A couple of my lady friends and I are getting together tomorrow afternoon for crafty time. I look forward to showing you what we work on. My friend has a new kitty named Ruby and a vintage sewing machine to setup.

What are you looking forward to this weekend?

Christmas wasn't on a weekend this year, but a day off in the middle of the week feels like a weekend, right? Here is Tater, wishing you a Merry Christmas while she wears the sweater that my mom sent.

second annual ornament exchange

Hey folks! I would love to offer to organize the second annual ornament exchange. I hope that you can join us!

Since living on my own the past few years, I have been slowly amassing home decor items. One of the items I sorely lacked was during Christmas--ornaments. This was even more apparent to me two years ago when I only had enough ornaments to decorate the front half of the Christmas tree. I have a few more this year than I did last year but still not enough to fill a whole tree. I thought maybe there would be others like me out there who have been slowly growing their ornament collection.  Hence, the Second Annual Ornament Exchange. (Bare with me while I use the graphics from last year…not much extra time equals no new graphics!)

Partners:: I will pair each participant with one other person.

Cost:: It's free to participate but the ornament you send to your partner must have a minimum value of $5. If you go above and beyond the $5 worth, that is up to you and your partner. Also, if you make or sell ornaments and would like to send one of your own products to your partner that is fine AS LONG AS your product fits your partner's interests (more info about that below).

Shipping:: This gift exchange is open to international participants. I understand that some of you will be interested in items from other countries and some of you would prefer not to pay that much extra for shipping. Please be sure to specify in your comment below if you are willing to be paired with a person from a different country or not.

Schedule:: Sign-ups open today, Monday, November 25th. Sign-ups will close Monday, December 2nd. Partners will be announced Tuesday, December 3rd. Packages must be shipped no later than Tuesday, December 11th so we all have the ornament in time to admire on our tree.

Share + Admire:: If you'd like to share photos of the ornament/package you are sending or receiving feel free to post them on Instagram with the hash tag #ornamentexchange2013. Also, you can share them on your blog and either link back to this blog, comment below with the link, or email me about it. I look forward to sharing some exchanged ornaments when this has finished.

Getting what you want:: The questionnaire includes a section for you to fill out to help your partner pick out or make an ornament that is sure to be something you'll like. So answer the questions thoroughly!

The sign-up:: If you wish to participate in this ornament exchange please fill out the questionnaire below. Please copy and paste the questions into a comment at the end this post or email them to me at jean (dot) emily (at) gmail (dot) com. Submitting the questionnaire is your commitment to follow the guidelines as they have been explained above.

::QUESTIONNAIRE::

November...already?

I began setting up for Thanksgiving. It's not really something I've setup for previously...I usually run from Halloween right into Autumn and then Christmas. This year, it's different and I can't quite put my finger on it. But I like it.
Last weekend I went to a Halloween party. I combined 4 different witch costumes for my final look. Rich was a mismosh of 8 year old mask, sailor hat, and Joker costume. We made quite the pair...so much laughter while we put these costumes together.

I've spent the rest of the week working, relaxing and trying to organize for the next couple of months. I'm looking forward to showing you all some new fabulous things for the shop as well as a couple other ideas.

inspired

I have been inspired lately in the area of dessert decorating. Not in the frosting, fondant sense but more of the garland, flag sense. I had started making them for cupcake toppers for my coworkers' birthdays. They loved them so much that I am thinking of starting another online shop just for them! Aren't they adorable?!

What's inspired you lately?

Have I mentioned yet how autumn is my favorite time of year? No? Well, it is. Now that I've been in a new place after 2.5 years, I have had new inspiration on what to do for decor. This is my main Halloween decor this year. It's a combination of DIY, vintage gifted cats, farmer's market sunflowers and gourds as well as skull tealight holders from Marshalls.
Since I painted the top of this table with chalkboard paint, I drew on it with a chalkboard paint pen. I cannot wait to use it each season/holiday! It's so much fun to draw/write things and wipe them away to start again.

How is your autumn/Halloween (or "Fall-oween") decor coming along?

settling in and halloween

I'm still settling into my home. This week I added a textured rug in the living room. I love the feel of it beneath my feet. As the temperature gets colder, I know I'll appreciate the warmth of this rug while I have my coffee. Tater loves it too. She laid on it as soon as I took it out of the packaging...which was a problem since I had not set it up yet! Once I have some daylight, I will show you Tate's love of the new rug.
Along with the change in weather comes one of my favorite holidays--Halloween! I made this for one of my walls based on a pin I saw about a Christmas craft.  I like the simple and clean design. I have been adding other items around my home as well.

What have you worked on for autumn?

my hair

Typically, my hair is changed by impulse. It's been a while since I've had one of these impulses, so my hair has stayed relatively the same for the past few years. Over the past couple of weeks, I have been feeling a change and so searched the internet for hairstyle inspiration. I wanted something short and a little daring, but not too salon-y or Anne Hathaway-esque. I ended up with this:

front view

shaved side view

And I love it! The 1/4 head shave part is the part that I love the most. It's fuzzy and easy. The other side I can do whatever I want with and is generally pretty similar to my prior hair style, but shorter. Also, the messier the better which works well with my get-up-and-go-in-the-morning routine.

On the way home, I wondered if Tater would recognize me. Of course she did! She likes having more access to my right ear for licking, too. Hehe. Here she is, holding down the fabric for me while I cut out  fabric for a blanket. That stinker!

another visit to nyc and some crafts

I went to visit Ryan again last weekend. It was so fabulous to see him and since it was President's Day Weekend, I could spend an extra day there. We walked through most of Central Park this time.
This is how I think of it.
We also went to Coney Island and Brighton Beach. Two of my favorite areas. I look forward to traveling again. Work may have me there next month and I'd love to see Ryan again.
This past weekend, we had another winter storm roll through and I planned to stay indoors and work on crafts and shop orders. Above features one of the custom shop orders. I need to practice a bit more with my embroidery technique, but so far it is pretty fun.
I started making my own wood stain this weekend too. Vinegar and a copper scouring pad. Once I remembered that copper needs to oxygenate to turn colors, it got a whole lot more interesting. What will I do with this wood stain? Well, I intend to make a few embroidery hoop projects and I want to use the stain to color the wooden hoops. Looking forward to the experiment!

I also photographed an upcycled circle scarf for the shop. You can find it available here.

What did you do with your weekend?

Here we are, the happy couple at the end of the day in Boston. We drove in with Tater and walked around, ate, and had a drink to end the day.

It's nice to get out into a bigger city once in a while. Besides it being my birthday this week, I had a couple of other exciting things happen as well. A review about one of my tea towels went up on Lotus Be Barefoot. Brandi's blog includes other product reviews, as well as a bit about her life with her child. Check out her blog if you get the chance. Another was being featured in a beautiful treasury. I know, I know...treasuries happen a lot. This one really stuck out to me as a beautiful one, though. Perhaps I needed some brightness during the dark winter months? I loved the collection of items together and had to share it with you.

What a great collection! I also have a fourth bit of exciting news, but I will need to wait to share it! It will be hard to wait, but so worth it!

Having Ryan home for an extended period has been lovely. This past weekend, we walked part of the Lexington-Concord trail with Tater. Seeing snow through her eyes is truly magical--she runs around, bites at it, charges forward and back...so much loving.

2013: be positive

I have been pleasantly surprised by all of the year in review and goals for 2013 posts. The theme this year seems to be positivity--be it looking forward to new adventures of the year or changing ones own attitude. I can go along with that. I didn't realize how cranky I was getting before my weeklong vacation. I came back to work Monday with a bright outlook and a sense of accomplishment. Although that's likely to dim somewhat as the week goes on, I would like to carry more of a sense of it with me. Here are a few photos that have made me happy the past couple weeks:
After driving through a bunch of this white stuff,
it was just nice to walk around and enjoy the look of it.

This sweet little place opened up while we were away. Can't wait to check it out!

Loved the way the sunlight fell through the trees and snow crystals.
Here's to more positivity!
